Rhino Heavy Duty Self-Healing Cutting Mat

Introduction

Quality Technician Ian works in the All-weather Lifeboat Centre (ALC) in Poole, Dorset.

A New State of the Art purpose-built facility that brings every stage of the lifeboat building process in-house and all under one roof.

This new facility will enable them to be equipped to build six of the next generation of ‘All-Weather Lifeboats here in the UK every year as well as maintaining their existing fleet.

With the new facility they are able to control build quality, costs and even offer apprenticeships both in Marine Engineering and Boatbuilding to continue to teach the skills required for generations of boatbuilders in the future.

The Challenge

The RNLI have previously bought many Rhino Cutting Mats, the last time it was to help with Operations rather than with Manufacturing or Building.

Onboard of all their fleets they carry ‘Admiralty Nautical Paper Charts’. Each week they receive manual corrections that they must apply to these charts in a magenta pen but if one chart receives multiple corrections, then they are sent a block insert which needs to be cut out and adhered to the chart. Therefore, they require a Cutting Mat that is both suitable for cutting paper but is also easily carried on and offboard as required.

For this New Project, the Mat would be for the New Component & Manufacturing area.

They needed quite a tough Mat as it was going to be used for cutting Fiberglass, Carbon Fibre and Aramid. Aramid is also known by the brand name of Kevlar, Nomex or Twaron. The fibers can be five times stronger than steel on an equal weight basis so, it really did need to be pretty tough and at the same time also to protect their benches.

The Solution

The Rhino Heavy Duty Cutting Mat proved to be the ideal Mat to meet those needs. Not only did it have an excellent robust cutting surface, it also enabled the knives to glide and give a straighter, more streamlined cut.

It’s a great all-rounder Mat and is extremely easy to wipe down, waterproof, solvent proof and resistant to most chemicals. However, Boatbuilding also includes more general tasks including drilling cutting, glueing and other general warehouse duties, the Heavy Duty Mat is ideal for all of these things being a perfect worksurface in any warehouse environment.
